Volkswagen Tiguan goes upmarket
Facelifted German mid-size SUV brings more choice and tech – for a price
Australian pricing and specs for the upgraded 2021 Volkswagen Tiguan have been announced ahead of first local deliveries from mid-March.
The German car-maker previously revealed an expanded model range for its best-selling model – up from four to six variants – and new variant names including the Life (as per the T-Cross baby SUV), Elegance and R-Line back in December.
So the big news here is a higher base price of $39,690 plus on-road costs for the entry-level front-wheel drive 110kW/250Nm 1.4-litre turbo-petrol 110TSI Life with six-speed twin-clutch DSG automatic transmission – the only 2WD variant in the revised mid-size SUV line-up.
Pricing for the second-generation Volkswagen Tiguan range that was launched in 2016 previously opened at $34,990 and there were two 2WD variants (110TSI Trendline and Comfortline).
Next up is the 132kW/320Nm 2.0-litre 132TSI Life with seven-speed DSG auto and 4MOTION all-wheel drive for $43,690 plus ORCs, effectively replacing the outgoing 110TSI and 132TSI Comfortline models (previously priced at a respective $39,490 and $43,990).
Reflecting its position as the most popular Tiguan powertrain choice, there are now two 162kW/350Nm 162TSI variants – Elegance, which replaces Highline, and R-Line, which replaces the former option pack – both with a 7DSG and AWD.
The 162TSI Elegance now costs $50,790 and the fully-loaded, sport-themed 162TSI R-Line is pegged at $53,790, flanking the sole 162TSI Highline previously priced at $51,690.
Topping the 2021 Volkswagen Tiguan line-up are the 147TDI Elegance ($52,290) and R-Line ($55,290).
Both are fitted with a new 147kW/400Nm 2.0-litre turbo-diesel matched with a 7DSG and AWD, marking the return of diesel power to the Tiguan after a brief hiatus during runout due to WLTP emissions restrictions for the former 140TDI.
An upgraded version of the stretched seven-seat Tiguan Allspace is yet to be revealed, and the 132kW Tiguan R performance flagship is yet to be confirmed for Australia, but is likely to arrive here in 2022 alongside the T-Roc R and new Golf R.
Volkswagen Australia says the base 110TSI Life will be the first to arrive in March, followed by the 162TSIs and 147TDIs in late May and then the 132TSI Life AWD in June.
Premium positioning
VW says the pricier, expanded 2021 range makes room for the more compact new T-Cross light SUV and T-Roc small SUV, which span $28,390-$40,990, and is justified by low demand for previous entry variants and the fact most Highlines were optioned with the R-Line pack.
The flagship Volkswagen Touareg ($81,490-$139,990) continues at the top of the brand's four-member SUV family.
The mid-life makeover for Volkswagen's answer to the Toyota RAV4, Mazda CX-5, Nissan X-TRAIL, Mitsubishi Outlander and Subaru Forester also brings fresh interior and exterior designs and more technology – much of it borrowed from the upcoming Golf 8 hatch.
"With the introduction of new technology from the new Mark 8 Golf, the 2021 Tiguan is not a mere mid-life upgrade," said Volkswagen Group Australia managing director Michael Bartsch. "Increasingly, Tiguan is the model with which Volkswagen is becoming synonymous."
New technologies now standard across the MQB-based Tiguan range include the 10.25-inch Digital Cockpit Pro virtual instrument cluster, the IQ.Drive Travel Assist self-driving system and Touch Climate Controls.
Replacing Traffic Jam Assist, Travel Assist offers semi-automated steering, acceleration and braking at almost all speeds at the push of a button on a new steering wheel by employing the adaptive lane guidance and adaptive cruise control systems. On R-Line models, conventional buttons are replaced by touch-force sensitive buttons with haptic feedback.
Also standard across the range, haptic Touch Climate Controls allow users to control fan speed and temperature by sliding their finger or with a slight push without having to take your eyes off the road.
Another standard Tiguan-first is Proactive Occupant Protection, which automatically closes the windows and (if fitted) panoramic sliding sunroof, and tightens the front seat belts in the event of an imminent collision.
Volkswagen's new IQ. Lights with Matrix LED headlights, meantime, is standard in Elegance and R-Line variants, in addition to an all-weather light function that, along with static cornering lights, replaces traditional fog lights to better illuminate the road at night or in poor weather conditions.
